Educational Programme - International 2022

The international programme is designed with a mix of online studies, individual preparation, online and face-to-face courses.

The first of the two courses of this first programme will take place online due to uncertainties about which international travel restrictions still apply. It will thereupon be decided whether the second course will take place face-to-face or online.

Programme structure:

1) Completion of an e-learning course (Access will be available approx. 3 weeks before the first course)
2) Two face-to–face / virtual courses of 2-3 days duration each with approximately 3-6 months interval.
3) Online examination: Must be completed at the latest one month after completion of 2nd course.
4) Submission of five case studies at the latest one year after successful examination.
5) Participation in two wound conferences at the latest one year after successful examination. The recommendation is to attend as a minimum one conference of the European Wound Management Association (EWMA Conference) and one other national or international wound conference).

The fellowship must be re-certified in 4 years.

The cost of the whole programme per participant is EUR 2,900.

Faculty

 

Kirsi Isoherranen, MD, PhD, EAFWH Treasurer

Dr. Isoherranen is an expert in wound care and skin cancers, currently working in the HUS Helsinki Wound Healing Centre. Dr. Isoherranen is a EWMA (European Wound Management Association) Council Member since 2016 and Honorary Treasurer since 2020. Her interest in chronic wounds has led her to obtain a Special Competence in Wound Management in 2015 and has continuously been involved in scientific and research activities around wound healing. Beside being involved in EAFWH educational activities Dr. Isoherranen has given various presentations at EADV and EWMA Congresses. She is also the Secretary General of UEMS Multidisciplinary Joint Committee in Wound Healing. Dr. Isoherranen has research expertise in conducted clinical trials and scientific interests with numerous publications.


 

Knut Kröger, MD, Professor, EAFWH President

Professor Dr. Knut Kröger has focussed on vascular medicine since 1994 and step by step be became senior house resident at the Department of Angiology at the University Hospital Essen in Germany. In 2009 he was appointed chief of the Vascular Department at the HELIOS Clinic in Krefeld. He is specialised on medical and interventional treatment of vascular diseases and wound care. Professor Kröger has published more than 100 scientific papers and the books titled “Noninvasive vascular diagnostic” and “Vascular therapy.” Professor Kröger is the editor of the German wound journal called “Woundmanagement” and imember of the steering committee of the Initiative of Chronic Wounds where he is also nvolved in the education programs.  


 

George-Sorin Tiplica, MD, Professor, EAFWH Secretary 

Professor Dr. George-Sorin Tiplica is senior dermato-venereologist and Head of the Dermatology 2 Clinic in Colentina Clinical Hospital, “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy – Bucharest, Romania. He is President of the UEMS MJC Wound Healing and Secretary of the EAFWH. He is interested in wound healing, sexually transmitted infections, and inflammatory skin diseases. Professor Dr. Tiplica is co-author of the European guideline on scabies, pediculosis pubis and syphilis. 


 

Elena Conde Montero, MD, PhD

Dr. Montero is a dematologist at the Hospital Universitario Infanta Leonor y Virgen de la Torre, Madrid and Diplôme Universitaire de Phlébologie, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris. Besides lecturing at the EAFWH programme courses Dr. Montero is also a member of the EWMA Council. 


 

Alexandra Butacu, MD, PhD, 

Dr. Alexandra-Irina Butacu is a Dermato-Venereology specialist currently working in the 2nd Department of Dermatology of Colentina Clinical Hospital, Bucharest, Romania. Dr. Butacu is focused on wound management, skin cancer and sexually transmitted infections. She is involved in teaching activities acting as an Assistant Professor of the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest and is part of the Organizing Committee of the EAFWH programme in Romania. 


 

Alberto Piaggesi, MD, Professor

Prof. Piaggesi is a leading endocrionologist and currently the director of the Diabetic Foot Section of the Pisa University Hospital, Department of Medicine, University of Pisa, Italy. Prof. Piaggesi has published more than 100 papers in national and international journals as well as  monographs in Italian and in English on neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease and diabetic foot syndrome. Prof. Piaggesi is also a member of the EWMA Council and the immediate past president of EWMA. 


 

Leena Berg M.D., Ph.D., Senior consultant in plastic surgery

Dr. Berg has a Special Competence in Wound Management. Her clinical interest is in both acute and chronic wounds and also their surgical treatment. Dr. Berg's clinical research interests are cost effectiveness in plastic surgery, flap ischaemia and follow up of microsurgical flaps, surgical treatment of burns, burn wound care, negative pressure wound therapy, reconstruction of thoracic defects. She has written a chapter in Finnish textbook about pressure ulcers in ICU patients and belongs to a work group, that was responsible for the translation of Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers: Quick Reference Guide in Finnish. Dr. Berg is a work group member in the Nursing Research Foundation (Evidence Based Nursing in the Prevention Ulcers in Adult Patients).

 


 

Professor Dr. Joachim Dissemond, Specialist in dermatology and venereology with additional training in allergology and sports medicine.

Professor Dissemond has been working at the Department of Dermatology at Essen University Hospital in Germany since 1999, initially as an assistant physician and since 2003 as a senior physician. On his initiative, a wound outpatient clinic was set up at Essen University Hospital. Today, the Clinic for Dermatology is nationally recognised as a certified interdisciplinary wound centre. His specialties include the diagnosis and treatment of various types of leg ulcers and immunological wounds like pyoderma gangrenosum. Prof. Dissemond is an active member in the executive boards of several societies, including the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Wundheilung (AGW), Initiative Chronische Wunden (ICW), and WundDACH (umbrella organisation for German speaking countries). He is also part of the editorial board of various scientific journals and the author of more than 600 scientific articles, several book chapters and books on wound healing.
